Virtue of the Month Program

Monday, October 5, 2015 Virtue of the Month
St. Alphonsus frequently emphasized that Christian virtues are not theoretical constricts to be admired but practical gifts to be used in living Christian life.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Peace and blessings as you begin a new school year! Can you believe the first full week is here already? This year we are continuing the Virtue of the Month Program. Along with this letter you will find a paper highlighting the virtue of Faith for September.
According to Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1803), a virtue is a “habitual and firm disposition to do good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but also to give the best of himself (herself). The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his (her) sensory and spiritual powers; he (she) pursues the good and chooses it in concrete ways.” St. Gregory of Nyssa said, “The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God.”

St. Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Redemptorist Order, and our IHM Community Patron, (since we were founded by a Redemptorist priest, Father Louis Florent Gillet) formulated a plan to grow in holiness and salvation by following a virtue of the month. The IHM Congregation continues this Alphonsian tradition by highlighting virtues, patrons, and Scriptural texts each month as well. In keeping with this tradition, we would like to base our virtue of the month program on the works of St. Alphonsus Liguori. It is another way of sharing our IHM Charism with our students.

Each month the teachers will receive a new paper with an overview of the virtue for that particular month. It will also include suggestions for practical ways in which to help your children grow in the specific virtue. Please feel free to use some or all of the suggestions at home.
At the end of each month, the teacher will submit the name of one student in her/his class that manifested in his/her daily actions the virtue for that particular month. They will receive a certificate and pin and their names and pictures will be posted.

Thank you for all you do to exemplify and instill the Christian Virtues in your children!

Sincerely,
Sister Elizabeth Ann
